Chinese yuan reaches 6.69 per dollar, its strongest level since 2022
WHAT HAPPENED
The yuan closed at 6.6955 per dollar, its strongest level since June 2022. The Chinese central bank also raised its reference for the eighth consecutive day and China purchased 260,000 tons of U.S. soybeans.
WHY IT MATTERS
A stronger yuan makes oil, soybeans, and imported components cheaper for China, but slightly increases the cost of its cell phones, clothing, and auto parts for foreign buyers. It also suggests that trade tensions between China and the U.S. may be easing.
AND FOR YOUR PORTFOLIO
For a long-term investor, the yuan serves as a thermometer of the relationship between the two largest economies. If calm continues, trade and industrial supply chains could benefit; Mexico could compete better with Chinese products in the U.S.
