Inflation in the Eurozone rises to 3.2% in August due to energy
WHAT HAPPENED
Eurozone inflation rose from 2.9% to 3.2% in August. Energy was the main cause: electricity and gas increased by 14.3% in a year. In Spain, it reached 4.6%; in France, it was 2.6%.
WHY IT MATTERS
Higher oil prices, linked to the conflict in the Middle East, increased energy, gasoline, and transportation costs. This may later pressure food and other products. As inflation exceeds the 2% target, the ECB may maintain or raise rates, making mortgages and loans more expensive.
AND FOR YOUR PORTFOLIO
For European households, the impact is first seen in electricity and gas bills, gasoline, and transportation. For a long-term portfolio, higher rates usually cool consumption and construction while raising financing costs for businesses and families.
