Mexican Government Sends Bill to Promote Digital Payments

WHAT HAPPENED

The government of Mexico presented a bill to Congress to promote payments via QR code or NFC technology and facilitate accounts and loans with digital identifications. It is still in committees and may change.

WHY IT MATTERS

If approved, the Ministry of Finance could define strategic sectors where digital payments would be mandatory. This would pressure businesses and governments to install equipment, while customers would have more options. Adoption would be uneven due to the lack of bank accounts and good signal.

AND FOR YOUR PORTFOLIO

For your wallet, the change could make paying without cash more common, but it would not happen immediately or equally across all of Mexico. Small businesses in defined sectors would have to prepare to accept QR or card payments.

💬 TELL IT LIKE THIS

“The initiative does not eliminate cash: it lays the groundwork for some sectors to be required to accept digital payments.”
