Mexican peso reaches its strongest level in over 2 years: 16.90 per dollar

WHAT HAPPENED

The Mexican peso reached 16.90 per dollar, its strongest level since May 2024. It has gained for five weeks and is up 5.8% against the dollar in 2026.

WHY IT MATTERS

The dollar is losing strength and Mexico's interest rate, at 6.50%, attracts money to peso-denominated assets. The effect reaches imports, electronics, cars, dollar debt, remittances, tourism, and oil.

AND FOR YOUR PORTFOLIO

For consumers, a strong peso lowers the cost of products purchased abroad and reduces the peso cost of dollar debts. However, each dollar of a remittance is worth about 5.8% fewer pesos than at the beginning of 2026.

💬 TELL IT LIKE THIS

“A strong peso lowers the cost of imports but makes remittances and dollar income yield less when converted to pesos.”
