India raises $10 billion in stocks, record month in the stock market
WHAT HAPPENED
India raised nearly $10 billion in stocks during August, a monthly record. The government obtained $3.2 billion by selling part of LIC, and 24 companies debuted on the stock exchange; 20 are trading above their initial price.
WHY IT MATTERS
Local funds, insurers, individuals, and foreigners are putting more money into new stocks. This facilitates companies financing their expansion. However, the overall market, valued at $5.1 trillion, has performed worse than other Asian exchanges: there is enthusiasm for the new and caution with the old.
AND FOR YOUR PORTFOLIO
For a long-term portfolio, India shows a combination of business growth and strong interest in its new stocks. Still, just because a stock rises at debut does not guarantee that the entire market will advance: the difference between successful debuts and already listed companies matters.
