Mexican peso hits its strongest level since 2024: 16.89 per dollar
WHAT HAPPENED
The dollar closed at 16.89 pesos, its lowest level since May 2024. The peso gained 0.21% on Friday and 0.82% for the week. Mexico received $35 billion in foreign direct investment in the first half of 2026.
WHY IT MATTERS
The dollar is losing strength globally and money continues to flow into Mexico. This makes dollar purchases cheaper and reduces pressure on gasoline, electronics, and some food prices. But remittances yield less and exporters receive fewer pesos for each dollar.
AND FOR YOUR PORTFOLIO
For your wallet, traveling, buying imported products, or paying debts in dollars costs less. In a diversified portfolio, importing companies may benefit, while exporters and businesses receiving remittances face a less favorable conversion.
💬 TELL IT LIKE THIS
“A strong peso makes what we buy abroad cheaper, but reduces the value of remittances and sales for exporters in Mexico.”
