India collected 15.4% more in its GST in July, a 14-month high

WHAT HAPPENED

India collected 2.11 trillion rupees from its consumption tax in July, 15.4% more than a year ago and the largest increase in 14 months. The collection on imported goods rose by 28.8%; domestic collection increased by 10.1%.

WHY IT MATTERS

The jump suggests that factories are buying more machinery and raw materials from abroad. Industry and importers feel it first; everyday consumption is growing less. More imports may also pressure the rupee if exports do not advance similarly.

AND FOR YOUR PORTFOLIO

For a long-term investor, the data points to an active Indian industry and gives the government more money for infrastructure and social programs. But the detail matters: the growth came more from foreign purchases than from domestic consumption.
