Brazil: Unemployment Falls to 5.3%, the Lowest for July in 14 Years
WHAT HAPPENED
Unemployment in Brazil fell to 5.3% in the quarter ending in July, down from 5.8% in April and 5.6% a year ago. There are 103.3 million people employed, a record.
WHY IT MATTERS
More people with jobs have income to spend in stores, restaurants, and services. However, strong employment may lead the central bank to keep its interest rate at 14% for longer, making credit more expensive for families, construction, and businesses.
AND FOR YOUR PORTFOLIO
For a long-term investor, Brazil shows two opposing forces: more jobs can boost sales for consumer-related companies, while a 14% interest rate keeps loans for buying homes, cars, or expanding businesses expensive.
