India sets record: accumulates $729,330 million in reserves
WHAT HAPPENED
India reached a record of $729,330 million in international reserves as of August 21, after adding $12,420 million in one week. The amount includes $591,330 million in currencies and $114,220 million in gold.
WHY IT MATTERS
The central bank attracted dollars from Indians living abroad by offering better interest rates. With this buffer, India can cover about 11 months of imports, such as fuel and technology, and better withstand a drop in the rupee or a global crisis.
AND FOR YOUR PORTFOLIO
For a long-term investor, it is a sign of greater stability in India: banks, energy, and technology importers face less exchange rate pressure. It also reduces the risk of a sudden capital outflow hitting the economy.
