Oil drops 2.4% to $100 after rumors of a truce in the Middle East

WHAT HAPPENED

WTI oil fell 2.4%, to $100.05 per barrel, and Brent dropped 2.8%, to $104.61. The decline came after rumors of a truce that would allow the oil passage through the Strait of Hormuz to remain open.

WHY IT MATTERS

Nearly one-fifth of the world's oil passes through Hormuz. If that route is blocked, fuel becomes scarce and prices rise. That's why freight transport, airlines, gasoline, and products shipped by truck or plane feel the change first.

AND FOR YOUR PORTFOLIO

The drop of one day does not erase the weekly increase of nearly 9% nor the jump from around $92 per barrel. For a long-term portfolio, oil shows how a geopolitical crisis can increase costs and pressure companies and consumers.

💬 TELL IT LIKE THIS

“Oil dropped due to a possible truce, but it remains expensive: a new escalation could again raise gasoline, flight, and product prices.”
