What they do

Cisco Systems (San Jose, California; CEO Chuck Robbins; ~82,400 employees as of July 25, 2026) makes the hardware and software that move data: switches and routers for companies, carriers and data centers, Wi-Fi for offices and campuses, its own networking chip (Silicon One) and optics, firewalls and cybersecurity, Webex video calls and system monitoring with Splunk. Fiscal 2026 revenue (year ended July 25): $63.3 billion (+12%).

Fourth-quarter mix: products $13.459 billion (+24%) — networking +28%, security +14%, collaboration +12%, observability +6% — and services $3.793 billion (flat). Software: $6.2 billion (+11%); annualized recurring revenue (ARR) $32.1 billion (+3%).

The big story is artificial intelligence: the four largest cloud operators (hyperscalers) buy its switches, chips and optics to connect thousands of processors. Those orders totaled $9.3 billion in fiscal 2026 ($4 billion in the fourth quarter alone), and Cisco expects $7.5 billion of AI revenue in 2027, nearly double the ~$3.8 billion of 2026. On top of that, companies are refreshing their office networks (campus orders +20%).

Why we like it

Three reasons.

  • AI BECAME ITS ENGINE: orders from the cloud giants went from $600 million in fiscal Q3 2025 to $1.9 billion in fiscal Q3 2026 and $4 billion in Q4; the year closed with $9.3 billion in orders and 2027 guidance calls for $7.5 billion of AI revenue (nearly double). Total product orders grew 35% and networking orders 40% — the eighth straight quarter of double-digit growth.
  • GUIDANCE BLEW PAST WALL STREET: fiscal Q1 2027 of $18.0–18.2 billion (vs ~$16.8 billion expected) and adjusted EPS of $1.32–1.34 (vs $1.16); fiscal 2027 at $72.2–73.4 billion (+14–16%) and $5.05–5.11 per share (+17–18%). All with $5.4 billion of operating cash flow in the quarter (+27%).
  • WE'RE BUYING AFTER THE SELLOFF: the stock fell 8.4% on August 13 over margins, not a lack of demand, and at $111.11 it sits ~15% below its all-time high ($130.37) — practically the price at which Cisco itself bought back 13 million shares in the quarter ($111.53 average). It returned $12.7 billion to shareholders in the year (99% of free cash flow), raised its dividend for the 15th straight year, and the consensus is Buy with a $137.63 average target (+23.9%) from 28 analysts.

Key Risk

#1: margins are getting squeezed. AI equipment earns less per dollar than software and memory got more expensive: adjusted gross margin fell from 68.4% to 66.3% in the quarter and next quarter's guidance is 65–66% — which is why the stock fell 8.4% despite beating estimates. Others:

  • peak growth?: ~5 points of the quarter's growth came from price increases, which don't repeat forever (Cisco expects 4–5 points in 2027, weighted to the first half); services didn't grow and ARR was only +3%;
  • dependence on AI spending: a growing share of the business depends on four cloud giants — if they cut investment, orders slow — and it competes with strong rivals like Arista and Nvidia in data-center networking;
  • it isn't cheap: 33.1x last year's earnings (19.6x expected), after rising ~60% in 2026 before the report;
  • restructuring underway: fewer than 4,000 jobs cut (May 2026) with charges of up to $1 billion, ~$450 million in the fourth quarter and the rest in 2027;
  • small dividend (~1.5%): here you're buying growth, with some income on the side.
