What they do

Alliant Energy (Madison, Wisconsin; CEO Lisa Barton; ~2,950 employees) is a regulated utility: it generates, transmits and sells electricity to ~1 million customers and distributes natural gas to ~430,000 customers in Iowa and Wisconsin, through its two subsidiaries — Interstate Power and Light (IPL, Iowa) and Wisconsin Power and Light (WPL, Wisconsin). Revenue over the last 12 months: ~$4.43 billion.

The model is simple: it invests in plants, lines and storage; state regulators approve that investment and let it charge rates that give it a return on what it invested. That is why earnings grow when the approved 'asset base' grows — and why the $13.4 billion investment for 2026-2029 (17% more than the previous plan) is the backbone of growth.

What changed is demand: three data centers are advancing in construction in its territory — QTS in Cedar Rapids (first 300 MW to be energized in late 2026), Google in Iowa and Meta in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin — with 3.4 GW contracted in total, a new 370 MW contract signed in Iowa and another 2–4 GW of mature opportunities in line. To serve them it is building gas plants (Morgan Valley 720 MW, River Hawk ~1,200 MW), wind (Bent Tree North 153 MW, Columbia Wind 277 MW) and batteries.

Why we like it

Three reasons.

  • POWER DEMAND IS SOARING AND IT'S SIGNED: it expects electricity demand to grow 60% by 2031 versus 2025, with 3.4 GW already contracted with data centers (QTS, Google, Meta) and retail sales growing ~11% a year in 2025-2031; in 2026 it raised its sales forecast to +2–3% (from +1%).
  • VISIBLE GROWTH WITH A REGULATED RETURN: $13.4 billion of investment in 2026-2029 (~12% annual growth), on which regulators allow it to earn; 2026 guidance of $3.36–$3.46 per share reaffirmed and 'in the upper half', and a target of more than 7% annual earnings growth in 2027-2029 — with ~75% of the new equity it needs ($1.8 billion of $2.4 billion) already secured through forward share sales.
  • RISING INCOME AND A DISCOUNTED PRICE: a $2.14 annual dividend (+5.4% in 2026) that has risen 22 years in a row, 3.2% at the current price; the stock has fallen ~15% from its 52-week high ($78.81) and at $67.05 trades at 17.9x expected earnings, with a Buy consensus and an average target of $78.04 (+16.4%).

Key Risk

The #1: it depends on regulators and data centers delivering. Its growth rests on the Iowa and Wisconsin commissions approving the new plants (Morgan Valley is decided in Q1 2027, River Hawk in Q2) and letting it recover them in rates — and on the data centers arriving on time; if they are delayed or canceled, the investment remains along with political pressure over households' power bills. Others:

  • financing: it needs $2.4 billion in new shares in 2026-2029 (dilution) and up to $800 million of debt in 2026; its debt is already ~1.6 times its equity and financing costs subtracted $0.07 per share in the quarter;
  • interest rates: utilities tend to fall when rates rise, because their dividends compete with bonds;
  • weather: a milder second quarter subtracted $0.05 per share and earnings per share ($0.65) came in below expectations ($0.69);
  • execution: many large projects at once, with operating costs subtracting $0.11 per share in the quarter.
