What they do
Lam Research (Nasdaq: LRCX; Fremont, California; CEO Tim Archer; ~23,300 employees; founded in 1980) designs and builds equipment for making semiconductors. A modern chip is built layer by layer: Lam's machines deposit films just a few atoms thick and etch (carve) microscopic grooves and holes into the silicon wafer. It leads in etch and is strong in deposition, wafer cleaning and the advanced packaging that stacks chips (like the high-speed HBM memory used by AI processors).
Its customers are the big chipmakers: in the June quarter, 46% of equipment sales came from memory (NAND and DRAM, 23% each), 44% from foundry (contract manufacturers) and 10% from logic. By country: Taiwan 27%, China 26%, Korea 20%, Japan 9%, US 9%. Beyond selling machines it charges for servicing them, spare parts and upgrades: that business (Customer Support) brought in $2.47 billion in the quarter (+43%), revenue that grows with every installed machine.
The 2026 engine is AI: every data center needs 2-nanometer processors and memory with more layers (NAND moving to 256 layers or more), and every technology leap requires more etch and deposition steps per wafer. Lam committed $3 billion to new lab and engineering capacity in the US, including a site in Oregon.
Why we like it
Three reasons.
- THE BUSINESS IS AT ITS BEST: fiscal 2026 (ended June 28) with revenue $23.23 billion (+26%) and EPS $5.82 (+41%); a fourth straight record quarter at $6.72 billion (+30%) and a 52% gross margin, the highest in 20 years. September guidance is $8.1 billion (+52% vs $5.32 billion a year ago) and EPS $2.15 (vs $1.24). It raised its estimate for the total 2026 chipmaking-equipment market from $135 billion to $140 billion and now to 'around $150 billion'.
- SOLD OUT AS FAR AS CAPACITY ALLOWS: CFO Doug Bettinger said on September 10 that the industry is 'fundamentally sold out' — the limit is factory space, not orders. NAND memory sales more than doubled in the quarter and Lam sees a ~$40 billion NAND upgrade opportunity through 2027; it expects advanced packaging to grow more than 70%.
- THE FEAR IS ALREADY IN THE PRICE: at $278.17 it is 37% below its June 30 record ($438.50), at 23.1x expected earnings, with a Strong Buy consensus and a ~$373 average target (+34%; Berenberg raised its target to $420). And it shares the cash: it raised the dividend 27% on August 27 and has ~$4 billion left authorized for buying back its own shares.
Key Risk
#1: it depends on AI spending continuing. It sells machines: when chipmakers slow investment, orders drop fast. On that fear alone (Meta selling surplus AI capacity, SK Hynix slowing its HBM4 memory) the stock went from $438.50 on June 30 to $250.63 on July 29: −43% in a month, with the business at records. Others:
- China (26% of revenue, 34% the prior quarter): new US restrictions on equipment sales to Chinese customers (June 2026) and Chinese equipment makers advancing with state backing; the company itself calls Chinese demand uneven;
- a price that already expects a lot: 46.6x trailing earnings — any stumble is punished hard (in September it already slid from ~$320 to ~$278);
- concentrated, cyclical customers: a few memory and foundry giants; the company flagged possible NAND oversupply in 2028 and higher inventory and headcount that would weigh if growth slows;
- CEO Tim Archer sold 30,000 shares on September 9 at an average $319.26 (~$9.6 million).
