What they do
Western Digital designs and manufactures hard disk drives (HDDs): the devices where data is stored massively and cheaply. Its main customers are data-center operators — Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Meta and the Chinese giants — that buy ultra-high-capacity (nearline) drives to store the oceans of information AI generates and consumes: videos, models, logs, backups, training data. It also sells internal, external and home-storage drives, but that is the minority today: 89% of revenue comes from hyperscale cloud and only ~5% from consumers. In February 2025 the company split in two: flash/NAND memory left as SanDisk (a separate company, now trading on its own) and Western Digital kept the pure hard-drive business. Founded in 1970, ~40,000 employees, CEO Irving Tan. It is one of only TWO relevant hard-drive manufacturers on the planet alongside Seagate — a real duopoly, with Toshiba a distant third.
Why we like it
Four reasons.
- SOLD OUT: the company placed 100% of its 2026 hard-drive production before manufacturing it. When your entire capacity is sold in advance, price stops being negotiated downward — and you can see it in the guided gross margin of 55-56%, a number this business had never seen (historically 25-30%).
- The duopoly: only two relevant HDD manufacturers remain in the world. Building a new plant takes years and billions; nobody is entering in time for this wave.
- AI needs cheap storage: the hard drive does not compete with the fast memory inside chips — it competes for the cheapest terabyte, and there it has no rival. Every model trained, every video generated and every backup ends up on a drive.
- PRICE: the stock reached $799.87 and today opens at $477 — a ~40% discount even though the latest report (Aug 5) beat on earnings (+8.9%) and sales (+44%), with next-quarter guidance above consensus. At 19x earnings with profits growing like this, the market is paying little for the growth. Consensus: Buy, average target $664.92 (+40% over our entry). The dividend is symbolic (0.13%) — this is a growth bet, not an income one.
Key Risk
#1 is the brutal cyclicality of this business: storage has lived through booms and busts for 40 years, and the very 'sold out' that inflates margins today becomes overcapacity when demand cools — if the hyperscalers pause capital spending, prices can collapse in a single quarter. Other risks:
- the stock already flew: up ~10x from its 52-week low ($74.42) — whoever buys today is not buying cheap in historical terms, only cheap against the recent high;
- broken momentum: it fell from ~$560 in late July to ~$477 today DESPITE an excellent report — the market is selling strength, a sign the AI-storage trade is crowded;
- customer concentration: 89% of revenue depends on a handful of cloud giants that negotiate with enormous leverage;
- long-term technology risk: if flash memory (SSD) falls far enough in price per terabyte, the hard drive loses its only advantage;
- no dividend cushion: 0.13% protects nobody in a drawdown.

Full Research
