What they do
Waste Connections (executive offices in Woodbridge, Ontario, and operating headquarters in The Woodlands, Texas; founded in 1997 in Folsom, California, by its current CEO Ron Mittelstaedt; ~24,200 employees, ~11,300 of them drivers) collects, transports and disposes of waste for ~9 million residential, commercial and industrial customers in 46 US states and 6 Canadian provinces. Q2 2026 revenue mix: collection 69.6%, landfills and transfer stations 18.1%, oil-and-gas industry waste treatment (E&P) 7.9%, recycling 2.4% and intermodal/other 2.0%.
Its strategy sets it apart from giants WM and Republic Services: it focuses on secondary markets with exclusive franchise or municipal contracts, where competition is minimal and prices rise year after year. At the end of 2025 it operated 77 municipal landfills, 20 oil-and-gas waste landfills and 17 other non-hazardous waste landfills; it captures gas at 61 of them and has more than a dozen renewable natural gas (RNG) plants that should all be running by early 2027.
It also grows by buying: ~$330 million of annualized revenue acquired in 2025 and ~$100 million in the first half of 2026, with another ~$30 million pending.
Why we like it
Three reasons.
- PRICES RISE EVEN WHEN LESS TRASH COMES IN: in Q2 2026 volume fell 1.9% (slow construction and uncertainty) and revenue still rose 6.4% to $2.562 billion on price +5.6%; adjusted EPS jumped to $1.50 from $1.29 (+16%) and the adjusted EBITDA margin reached 32.8%, helped by record safety and lower staff turnover. Construction and demolition tons grew again for the first time in 10 quarters.
- GUIDANCE WENT UP AND THE CASH IS ON ITS WAY: 2026 now at revenue $10.02–10.05 billion, adjusted EBITDA $3.33–3.34 billion and adjusted free cash flow $1.40–1.45 billion (+11–15% vs 2025); management expects double-digit growth in free cash flow per share in 2026 and 'more of the same' in 2027, when spending on the RNG plants ends and Chiquita Canyon payments decline. It is also investing ~$100 million in seven artificial intelligence initiatives (pricing, routing, customer service) already adding ~$20 million of EBITDA.
- QUALITY AT A DISCOUNT: it hit a 52-week low of $148.62 on June 2 (−23% in a year) while the business kept beating estimates; at $162.23 it trades at 25.8x expected earnings, with record buybacks of $614.5 million in the half (~1.5% of shares), 15 straight dividend increases since 2010, a Strong Buy consensus and an average target of ~$201 (+23.7%).
Key Risk
#1: Chiquita Canyon. This landfill in Los Angeles County has had an underground chemical reaction since 2022 (temperatures of nearly 260°F) that has generated more than 200,000 gallons of liquid a day; it stopped accepting waste on January 1, 2025 and will cost $100–150 million in cash in 2026. There is a Los Angeles County lawsuit (2024), a company countersuit for $825 million (June 2026), a summary of violations from California's environmental regulator (August 14, 2026) and $138 million of landfill-closure accounting adjustments in the first half. Others:
- weak volume: −1.9% in the quarter; if the economy cools, price has to carry everything;
- slower growth: analysts expect ~5.8% revenue growth over 12 months vs 11.3% a year over the past five years;
- demanding multiple: 25.8x expected earnings and 38.7x past earnings — it isn't cheap, just less expensive than a year ago;
- small dividend (0.87%): you buy growth here, not income;
- commodity-sensitive pieces: oil-and-gas waste (7.9% of revenue) depends on drilling, and recycling, landfill gas and fuel swing.
