What they do
Wheaton Precious Metals invented and perfected the precious-metals 'streaming' model. It works like this: a miner needs capital to build or expand a mine; Wheaton pays hundreds of millions up front and in exchange signs the right to buy a percentage of all the gold or silver that comes out of that mine — for its entire useful life — at a fixed agreed price, typically a fraction of the market price. Wheaton takes the metal, sells it at the day's price and keeps the difference. The structural advantage: it gets full exposure to rising gold and silver WITHOUT taking on the risks that sink miners (construction overruns, strikes, fuel prices, accidents, payroll inflation). Its portfolio includes streams on mines operated by giants such as BHP (Antamina, the largest deal in its history), plus Hemlo, Fenix, Platreef and Goose. It trades in New York and Toronto, is headquartered in Vancouver, Canada, CEO Haytham Hodaly — with a staff of just 41 people.
Why we like it
Three reasons.
- THE MODEL: in a metals bull market a traditional miner sees revenue rise but also its costs (energy, wages, inputs); Wheaton buys at a price fixed years ago, so every dollar gold or silver rises drops almost entirely into its margin. It is leveraged exposure to the metal without the operating risk. The result in numbers: TTM revenue +90.8% and earnings per share +159.6%.
- THE CYCLE: silver trades above $68 an ounce and gold at all-time highs, driven by central-bank buying, rates turning lower and real industrial demand (silver is a critical input for solar panels and electronics). Wheaton is the cleanest way to hold that exposure inside an equity portfolio.
- PROVEN EXECUTION: record Q2 2026 — $929M revenue, $543M profit, $650M operating cash flow — and a record half — $1.8B / $1.1B / $1.4B; production +14% year to date to 414,755 gold-equivalent ounces; dividend raised 18%; $2.6 billion of available liquidity to keep buying streams. Consensus: Strong Buy, target $174.61. The dividend (0.47%) is small but growing — here the expected return comes from the metal, not the coupon.
Key Risk
#1 is obvious: this is a bet on the price of gold and silver. If metals correct, Wheaton falls with them and probably faster, because it trades today at high multiples (35x earnings) that only make sense with sustained elevated metal prices. Other risks:
- the stock is near its high ($165.76 52-week peak against our $154.70 entry) — we are buying strength, not a discount;
- counterparty risk: Wheaton does not operate the mines, it depends on partners building them, running them well and not going bankrupt; a project that slips or fails is money advanced that yields less;
- jurisdiction risk: its streams sit in mines across several countries, exposed to changes in royalties, taxes or nationalization;
- demanding multiple: 35x earnings for a company whose revenue depends on a commodity leaves little room for error if the cycle turns;
- low dividend: 0.47% does not offset a fall in the metal.

Full Research
